Our Story

Hello, my name is Sonya Woodard and I am the creator of Let's Dip.  I am delighted you stopped by to learn about me and my business.  I have always been a food enthusiast and love experimenting with different flavors and found a knack many years ago for creating dips made with fresh ingredients filled with yummy goodness suitable for all occasions.

My journey with cooking started with my great-grandmother and grandmother.  Our home was filled with love, strength, and the captivating aromas of home-cooked meals.  Our humble home was not just a place to reside but a sanctuary that echoed with laughter, shared stories, and the clinking of pots and pans.  Cooking together was an essential part of our lives, a ritual that bound us together in a beautiful tapestry of tradition and heritage.

Our extraordinary household was comprised of a remarkable group of Black women: my great-grandmother, Tennessee was the heart and soul of the household and possessed a wealth of culinary wisdom passed down through generations.  She believed that food had a magical ability to nurture the body, heal the soul, and strengthen familial bonds.  She imparted this wisdom to her beloved daughter, granddaughters, and great-granddaughters who eagerly absorbed every word, seasoning and technique.

In the cozy kitchen, the women congregated, each with a role to play.  My great-grandmother, with her gentle yet firm hands, guided our family through the intricate dance of flavors and spices.  My grandmother Ernestine, the embodiment of grace, shared stories of her own childhood while chopping vegetables with precision, while my mother, Phyllis and my aunts followed the instructions handed down by these two women.  And me, I sat wide-eyed and eager to learn, soaking in every detail.

Through the art of cooking, my grandmothers wove the threads of our heritage into every dish.  They cooked with love and intention, infusing each recipe with the flavors and memories of our ancestors.  But cooking together was not just about the final product; it was a transformative experience that transcended the boundaries of the kitchen.  As my grandmothers, mother, and aunts stirred the pots and tasted sauces, the women shared laughter, tears, dreams, and aspirations for our family.  Cooking became a way to connect, communicate, and deepen our bond as a family.

In this matriarchal household, cooking was a celebration of their collective strength and affirmation of their identities.  It reminded them of the power they held within themselves and the legacy they were building for future generations sharing meals, stories, and laughter, creating connections that wove through generations.

As the scents of their cooking wafted through the house, neighbors were drawn to the warmth emanating from their kitchen.  The women welcomed them with open arms, extending our family to include the Orange Mound community where I was blessed to grown up.  Blessed because of the love of my family but also to be raised in Orange Mound, the first neighborhood in the United States to be built by and for African Americans.

Cooking together was a testament to the strength, resilience, and love of Black women.  It was a reminder that our stories mattered, and our voices deserve to be heard.  Through the generations, my grandmother's traditions would live on, rooted in the flavors and aromas that told the story of their journey.

For years, their voices and the memories of those times have played like a broken recording in my mind.  Though I would share the experiences and love of cooking with my three daughters, Tasheia, Jayla and Jayden through the years, and make my dips for family, friends, and anyone who asked, I was hesitant to take the leap of launching my own business.  It was only after continuous encouragement and support from my husband Jeffery that led me to offer my dips with you via Lets-Dip.com, starting with my signature spinach dip.  In bringing Let's Dip to life, I am reminded of the valuable life lessons I was taught by cooking with my grandmothers, mom and aunts: the importance of collaboration patience and perseverance.
